The Right Sports Bra…It’s in the FIT!
Luckily for me, I’ve never had too much of a problem in this area being of the smaller size when it comes to what Mother Nature provided. I have to admit upon researching this topic I’ve discovered I have been measuring my bra size incorrectly for years!
Studies show that between 70% and 80% of women are wearing the wrong size sports bra. Not having proper support leads to greater sagging and even pain during exercise. Something every woman wants to avoid. Below are the steps to take your own measurements:
- Stand up straight, preferably in front of a mirror, use a cloth measuring tape. (Wear a normal non-padded bra, not a sports bra)
- Measure the fullest part of your chest by loosely wrapping the tape measure around your chest, making sure the tape is straight in the back and front. Once you get a number, round to the nearest whole number. (For example if your bust measured 38.5 round up to 39)
- Find your band measurement by placing the tape around your ribcage just under your breasts. Make sure the tape is snug (not tight). Take the actual measurement and add 3 inches. If this number is odd, add 1 inch to make it an even number. (For example, if your band measured 32 inches, add 3 to get 35, because its odd add 1 to get 36).
- To find your cup size, subtract your band measurement from step 3, from your bust measurement in step 2. Use the chart below to determine which letter your cup size is. (In the example above 39-36=3 inches, which is a C cup).

- Put your brand size with your cup siz and you have your bra size.

Now that you know your bra size, there are a few things to consider when choosing the right sports bra for you:
- What type of activity are you going to be doing? High impact exercise, such as running or step aerobics require more support than workouts like yoga or pilates.
- Check the fabric – moisture-wicking fabrics, such as Dri-Fit and Cool Max, pull sweat away from the skin and help to keep you cool and dry.
- Check the straps – Wider straps or racer back will help avoid problems such as straps digging into your shoulders.
