Nutrition, Exercise and Positive Behavior Strategies

I was doing an interview on a TV show and the moderator of the show asked me a question about the importance of exercise and nutrition. Immediately I knew what I had to do. I had to provide a behavioral based answer because it is way too easy to give the standard answer of nutrition is 85% of what you do and exercise is 15%. In reality the habit of nutrition and exercise is based on a balanced behavior of the two.

Behavior of Exercise and Psychological Health

I love going to the gym or working out outside in parks and watching the behavior or exercisers. I wonder what the motivations are for each person to get off the couch and be active. In a society where image is everything I have to think that many people are exercising to look a certain way. And to be honest isn’t that why many of us are doing it? Sure, why not, but there are also many other health related reason such as decreasing the risks of cardiovascular, pulmonary and metabolic diseases.

Health Behavior Theory- What Motivates You?

50 percent of people drop out of an exercise program within 3 months of starting. Yup, that’s right…50 percent. That is a very large number and the reasons why can be mystifying and numerous as anything in life. One way to better understand why people have trouble staying in a regular routine of exercise is to examine the behavioral theories associated with exercise participation.

Leading Your Client to the Promise Land!

It has been seven months since we started our training program and my client was hitting a wall. Yup, she was complaining like crazy and she was beginning to cancel appointments. Even though she is only months away from hitting her goals she is beginning to falter. Welcome to working with clients on a long term basis. This current client that I have has endured the rough patches of starting a program. She has endured the middle portion of it that seems like no man’s land. However, as we get closer to her goals she is beginning to lose her mental focus for the task at hand.

How Can Trainers Help Clients with Body Image: Tricks of the Trade

Whenever I conduct fitness assessments I always start out my line of questioning with “what would you like to accomplish with a regular exercise routine?” And the answer is pretty much the same no matter who you are talking to. Most clients in my experience want what everyone else wants. They want to lose weight and look thin. Or they want to get ripped and look cut up. Simply put most people want to change something superficial about their body.

10 Behavioral Strategy Tips to Sticking to It For The Long-Term

You know the routine. New Year’s Resolutions rolls around and the gyms are packed with people who are ready to start their journey to becoming fit. And a few weeks later the gym is not as packed because a good portion of those new exercisers have already dropped out of exercising. It is an oddly repeated annual cycle of starting and stopping exercise.

To Increase Physical Activity....Focus on How, Not Why

Knowledge is power. Well…maybe. According to an article on “Science Blog,” people are more likely to increase their participation in physical activity due to behavioral versus knowledge based interventions. Over the years most experts suggested that people will increase their physical activity because of gaining more knowledge about the benefits and positive effects of exercise. According to blog contributor, Dr. Vicki Conn, people that discussing the benefits of exercise provide enough motivation for increased participation in physical activity. Dr. Conn is an advocate of discussing behavior changes strategies instead of benefits of exercise. Some behavioral strategies discussed were using feedback, self-monitoring, goal setting and exercise prescription.

Developing a Mental Skills Performance Plan for a Client

Whether you are an athlete or a recreational exerciser having a game plan for your physical activity is important. While it might seem logical to focus your efforts towards a physical performance plan, you might also want to consider a mental-skills performance plan.

Are You After the Perfect Body?

How do I look? I’m sure we’ve all heard that question from various people in our lives from our significant others to our friends. Regardless of whom it is, the common denominator is that people are very much aware and concerned about their physical appearance. In the article titled “Are You After the Perfect Body?” by Paige Waehner, she discussed the obsession that people have with their bodies. Initially she discussed the negative self-view that people have about their bodies and how people compare themselves to other or want to have bodies like other people.

Effects of Perceived Fitness Level of Exercise Partner on Intensity of Exertion

I was pushing myself pretty hard on the treadmill in the Baldwin Athletic Club. It was one of those hard Kansas storms that pushed me inside to do my run. While running I saw a follower exerciser hop on the treadmill next to mine. After a few minutes at a slower pace I noticed that the gentlemen running next to me began to pump up his speed to a level close to mine. Although there was no announcement that we were trying out do each other, it was unspoken that we were doing just that. Don’t you just love it? We’ve all had an experience like this and that is what hooked me to the article on the Effects of Perceived Fitness level of Exercise Partner on Intensity of Exertion.

High Raw gives the most comprehensible outline for directing your own health that I've found yet. It is not a book that tells you to take this herb for that illness, but rather a book that directs you in setting your own goals for health, weight, energy, fitness and success, and then gives really insightful and helpful systems for achieving them. In my video I'll share some of my favorite parts.
