I love going to the gym or working out outside in parks and watching the behavior or exercisers. I wonder what the motivations are for each person to get off the couch and be active. In a society where image is everything I have to think that many people are exercising to look a certain way. And to be honest isn’t that why many of us are doing it? Sure, why not, but there are also many other health related reason such as decreasing the risks of cardiovascular, pulmonary and metabolic diseases.
Still, there is another dimension of our health that is greatly impacted by our decision to become physically active on a regular basis…your psychological health. That’s right, researchers such as Dr. Len Kravitz, have been examining the effects of exercise and psychological health and the results have been amazing. Dr. Kravitz’s article, “Exercise and Psychological Health,” discusses how exercise has a positive effect on the mind. In particular, his research indicates that exercise decreases instances of depression and anxiety, relieves stress and increases positive mood states. The release of anti-depressant and pleasure inducing hormones during and after exercise is a powerful combatant against various psychological based conditions.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this article as it approached an exercise related subject that is often not talked about, but is often the most important to discuss. While many folks might lose interest in a consistent behavior of exercise because of the physical toll, it is important to note that it not just the physical that you are training. You are also training your mind to be strong, sharp and alert for anything you do.
