The positive result of the research done at the University of Washington in Seattle is the public awareness of the negative effect of the “typical high-fat American diet”. Hopefully, by understanding that eating this junk food can actually damage the neurons in our brain, Americans will begin incorporate healthier food into their diets.
Since this damage apparently affects the neurons that control body weight, it helps explain why maintaining weight loss for obese people can be so difficult. But it is not an excuse for a junk-food fest! The more you eat, the worse it gets!
Again, their answer seems to be developing a medication to limit neuron damage during overeating. Drugs to fix the problem? I suggest we start by re-educating, supporting and guiding Americans to a healthier way of eating. Too much of the focus has been on the instant gratification, quick fix, fast-paced society and the food industry gives us what we demand.
When the medical community, food industry, pharmaceutical industry and academia all have the same goal- the health of Americans- our obesity rates will drop.
