What Do Americans Choose?
Americans are becoming more and more conscious of what we’re eating… aren’t we? The sales numbers of healthy foods at restaurants beg to differ. Even though many popular restaurants have made changes to their menus to promote healthier eating, the majority of Americans still reach for the burgers and fries.
Although restaurants like McDonalds, Burger King, and IHOP are rolling out healthier choices, foods laden with calories and fat continue to be diner’s go-to choices. "We have wonderful, healthy foods if people want to buy them," said Andy Puzder, CEO of the company that runs Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr. "But they don't sell particularly well."
A survey done by Technomic (a food research company) last year showed that even though 47% of Americans like the idea of having healthier restaurant choices, only 23% actually go so far as to change their order. Why is this? People tend to make food choices based on impulse, not on what they know to be healthy.
This emotional reaction to food choices is likely why items like McDonald’s apple slices and IHOP’s yogurt and fruit bowls have failed to pick up steam. Price can be another factor. Healthier menu items tend to be more expensive. When budgets are tight, it’s easy to pick the less expensive (and less healthy) option.
Despite discouraging sales, restaurants around the country continue to roll out healthy food items. To learn more about what these restaurants are doing, check out this article:
