SO LONG FOOD GUIDE PYRAMID

The food guide pyramid will be no more. Its supreme reign held on for almost 20 years. The highly criticized government educational tool will be replaced by an even simpler symbol: a plate. Although the exact look will not be revealed until Thursday, expect the icon to be simple and easy to read.

Robert Post, deputy director for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion says, “What we looked for is a new simple icon that would inspire consumers to act on the dietary guidelines’ messages.” He also mentions how there will be a “how-to” and not just science. This will add the behavior component that was desperately needed.
It appears the plate will be divided into four sections each representing one of the four food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, and protein. Next to the plate will be a small circle representing a small portion of dairy. The icon will continue to communicate the new 2011 dietary guidelines but will changing the visual cues while still conveying the same message. A large part of this new change is stemming from the obesity epidemic. With Michelle Obama’s primary focus being the fight against obesity, it was inevitable we would see changes occur in how nutritional guidance was presented by the government.
Personally, I am excited for the change. Although I do not believe the new icon will change America’s fast food based, in a hurry, no time to cook or sit down for dinner with your family way of life. It will provide the nutrition educators an easier, more realistic tool to help people focus on making healthier food choices.
I will leave you with the six how-to messages that were released with the 2010 nutrition guidelines.
Balancing Calories:

  • Enjoy your food, but eat less.
  • Avoid oversized portions

Foods to Increase:

  • Make half your plate fruits and vegetables
  • Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1-percent) milk

Foods to Reduce:

  • Compare sodium in foods like soup, bread, and frozen meals-and choose the foods with lower numbers
  • Drink water instead of sugary drinks

High Raw gives the most comprehensible outline for directing your own health that I've found yet. It is not a book that tells you to take this herb for that illness, but rather a book that directs you in setting your own goals for health, weight, energy, fitness and success, and then gives really insightful and helpful systems for achieving them. In my video I'll share some of my favorite parts.
