Cough Medicine; Overdose Dangers

One of the most commonly abused over-the-counter (OTC) medication is something that most of us probably have in our medicine cabinets at home: dextromethorphan.

Dextromethorphan is used as a cough suppressant in OTC cold formulations. It’s available in several medications: Delsym, Robitussin DM, Nyquil, Tylenol Cold and Flu, Coricidin and many others. Used at appropriate doses it helps quiet a cough. However, it is taken at about 20 times the recommended dose and can cause hallucinations, delusions, paranoia and changed perceptions.

Just because it’s over the counter doesn’t mean its safe. It’s safe to be used at appropriate doses and as directed on the package. Taking such large doses can cause brain damage, seizures, toxicity from other agents in the product and even death.

Cough Medicine and the Warnings of Overdose Other agents that are commonly combined with dextromethorphan in these OTC products include antihistamines, decongestants, pain relievers, and guaifenesin. Antihistamines commonly make people drowsy and are used in cold products to dry out a runny nose. Decongestants are used to help head congestion and pressure but tend to make people jittery and can increase blood pressure. Pain relievers help body aches and headaches, but too much can cause liver or kidney damage, increase the risk of bleeding and cause stomach irritation. Guaifenesin is used to break up chest congestion and should be taken with plenty of water. Using too much of any of these products can cause problems and compound the complications of taking too much dextromethorphan.

High Raw gives the most comprehensible outline for directing your own health that I've found yet. It is not a book that tells you to take this herb for that illness, but rather a book that directs you in setting your own goals for health, weight, energy, fitness and success, and then gives really insightful and helpful systems for achieving them. In my video I'll share some of my favorite parts.
